2017 Grant Recipients – Round 1
Mount St Patrick College
“Mt St Patrick College, Murwillumbah, is located on the Tweed River in the far north of N.S.W. We are a rural community and, although not isolated, experiencing multiculturalism and understanding our connections with Asia, is difficult for students. I have been teaching here for three years, after spending the best part of fifteen years teaching in International schools in Singapore, Hong Kong and Darwin. My subject area is HSIE and I am currently teaching Geography and History from yr 7 to 12.
My career commenced in the 70’s, a time when we taught Asian Studies. That was the starting point of my fascination with Asian cultures, which lead to a deeper understanding that our Australian students needed to be engaged with Asia. During my teaching, my students and I have always been involved with Access Asia, the Asia Education Foundation and Asia Wise. Through these organisations, I have travelled to China, Vietnam and South Korea, deepening my understanding and enabling me to further engage students through the development of case studies. Thanks to Asia Wise I am currently conducting an audit focusing on areas where we can incorporate Asian case studies and will travel to Singapore to prepare a case study of Singapore as a World City/Urban Dynamics for year 12 Geography. Whilst in Singapore, I will also plan for an excursion to Singapore the following year. Asia Wise has given my school a real opportunity to understand the importance of Asia and our part in a shared future.”
